Hue lightstrip plus results in headache

Hi,

I don't know if this is the right place, but I get a headache immediately after turning on the lightstrip plus. It doesn't matter what color or white I choose.

This is a known problem for certain LED sources, like TV's or computer screens.

Sometimes it has something to do with the quality (and price) of these devices, but I don't think Philips uses low quality leds for this. 

Anybody having the same experience?

I don't get headaches

I don't get headaches personally, but I do notice that some LED products have a noticeable flicker (very cheap products or products like LED holiday strings which connect the LEDs directly across the mains without proper filtering tend to be especially guilty). I can detect the flicker when I move my eyes around in a dark room while looking at the lights: if there is flicker, I see a “spotty” effect rather than a simple blur. I find it annoying but tend to adapt over time.

I haven't seen or tried a Philips lightstrip in person, so I don't know for myself whether there is pronounced flicker with that particular device. I have noticed a slight flicker from the screw-in White Ambiance and Color lights at low dimming levels but don't find it too objectionable. It could be the flicker that is triggering migraines in some people. The flicker mainly depends on the circuitry driving the LEDs; better designs would use filtering or would strobe the LEDs at a high enough frequency that the flicker is unnoticeable (50/60 Hz line frequency isn't necessarily high enough, but something several thousand Hz or higher might be).

Flicker from White Ambiance and Color lights

I also have noticed some flicker from White Ambiance and Color Hue lights when I move my eyes around a room with lights in sight. According to my measurements Philips uses 1000 Hz PWM to control individual color channels and overall brightness of hue lights. So it is not enough to fully eliminate flicker, and several thousands Hz might be better.

Very interesting. I've known myself to be able to detect flicker up to 120 Hz or so, but had no idea that even 1 KHz was detectable. Though I definitely don't find it anywhere near as bad as some cheap LED bulbs that apparently strobe at the raw 50/60 Hz line frequency. It could be, too, that the nearly instant on/off time of LEDs makes the flicker particularly noticeable.  Some other lighting technologies, such as fluorescent tubes on conventional magnetic ballasts, have a noticeable flicker at double the line frequency, but the effect seems much softer, I'm guessing due to the bulb phosphor still producing some light during the dips and perhaps due to the flicker waveform being smoother.

Flicker from 1 kHz PWM can be

Flicker from 1 kHz PWM can be detected only with rapid eyes movement with light in sight. The light looks like multiple spots maybe partially overlapped. The smaller (angular size) and brighter the light and faster eyes movement, the more effect expressed. With fixed eyes this kind of flicker is undetectable even by peripheral vision.
